About Us

Peterborough Mountaineering Club was formed in 1954 by local enthusiasts and has grown to over 100 members, ranging in age from 16 to over 60. We regularly visit mountain areas of Britain, including the Peak District, Wales, the Lake District, Pembroke, Swanage, the south coast, Northumberland and the Scottish Highlands and Islands. Club activities have included walking, caving, climbing, scrambling, and many social events.

The club prides itself on being friendly and open to newcomers, supporting and encouraging members with competitions, novice weekends and training courses covering a variety of related subjects such as first aid, navigation and climbing and rescue techniques.

Each summer members travel to the Alps, Fontainebleau and to the sunny crags of Spain and Southern France. In recent years members have also been as far afield as Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand and Central Africa in search of adventure.

Social activities are held throughout the year and future events will include the Presidents summer BBQ, the 'chilli bash', a massive Christmas dinner at the cottage in Wales, slide shows, the awards ceremony, the quiz night and the annual dinner at which all members are obliged to enjoy themselves.

Prospective members are welcome and are invited to come along to any meet to find out about the Club at first hand. The club meets at the Peterborough Climbing wall most Tuesdays throughout the year.

The wall is jointly owned by the PMC and it's members and it was originally opened by Sir Chris Bonnington in December '95. In 1998 the wall was extended to include a roof section and bouldering cave.

Benefits.

Benefits of membership include: use of the club cottage, affiliate membership of the BMC, a quarterly club newsletter, club library and gear store, discounted use of the climbing wall, access to the members features on the web site and to meet other like minded people.
