Browser Compatibility

Every effort has been made to make this web site look good across all browsers. In order for a browser to show this web site, it should have a reasonably standards compliant implementation of Cascading Style Sheets. Most modern browsers do have reasonable CSS support so should display this sie correctly.

Testing has been carried out using several browsers and the compatibility list is shown below.

Windows Internet Explorer 5.5, 6.0

IE is the most used browser in the world, however it's support for CSS (a technology used in the creation of the web site) is quite buggy and the security problems relating to it are well known. The styling has been tweaked where appropriate to ensure that IE6 displays all pages correctly. There are much better browsers currently available and I would recommend trying some out. See below.

Mozilla 1.8

Mozilla is an Open Source browser project that rose from Netscape. Netscape decided back in xxxx that their browser was not 'fixable' so decided to open the project to the Open Source community and to start again from scratch. The technology created in this effort is used in other browsers, specifically Firefox and Netscape 6+ (see below) Support for internet standards is the best of any of the browsers

Mozilla Firebird 0.9

A lightweight (in terms of size) browser based on the Mozilla browser engine. Fast, more secure than IE and standards compliant. This web site was developed primarily using this browser and then tweaked to make it work with IE. It's the default browser on my PC. See xxx for more details.

Netscape Navigator 6, 7

Again, this is based on the Mozilla suite with some moditications. Now that Netscape, the company, have killed off most of their browser development, don;t expect too many updates for this one.

Opera 7

A closed source browser from an independant company. An advert supported version is available for free download although to disable the ads you have to pay $40. The latest version (7.5) has a very nicely redesigned interface and is very fast and secure. The is one important caveat with this browser and the dynamic nature of the pages on this web site. It uses a very agressive caching policy which means that it won't reflect the changes to your menu structure after you've logged on or off unless you refresh the page manually or change the caching setting (in 7.5 Tools | Preferences. Go to history and cache and change 'Check document' to always.

What about other browsers, then?

I don't have access to a Mac. I don't run Linux. Therefore I haven't been able to test this site with browsers like Konqueror (Linux) and Safari (Apple). All I can say is that they should work - but if you see any odd behaviour send me a screenshot to webmaster@peterboroughmc.org.uk and I'll do what I can. Any club members who'd like to beta test future site updates for non-windows platforms can also contact me at the same address.

All tests carried out using the Windows version of the browser.
